AI SDRs conquered the enterprise. The SMB gap is the next $12B question.

The AI sales development market hit $5.8B in 2026 on the back of enterprise adoption. Only 14% of small businesses have followed — and a wave of no-code vendors is racing to change that.

The AI sales development market reached $5.81 billion in 2026, up from $4.39 billion in 2025, according to Business Research Company data compiled in a July DataMagnet category review. Fortune Business Insights pegs the same year closer to $5.22 billion. Both point to a 32.3% CAGR that would carry the category to $17.58 billion by 2030. The enterprise side of that curve is largely settled. The SMB side barely exists.

An AI SDR, per IBM’s April 2026 primer, is a software system that handles the early, top-of-funnel work: identifying prospects, engaging leads, qualifying opportunities before anything reaches a human. Unlike a human SDR, it doesn’t rely on manual effort. It runs autonomously across high volumes of early-stage interactions. That definition is now boilerplate inside Fortune 500 revenue orgs. It’s rare in businesses with fewer than a hundred employees.

The Upwork Research Institute’s Q1 2026 Business Leader Landscape, a survey of 750 U.S. business leaders, shows what the gap actually looks like. 41% of SMBs are piloting AI agents for decision support, with just 3% not considering them. 34% are piloting for workflow automation against 2% holdouts. 30% are piloting autonomous task execution, with 6% still on the sidelines. Among SMBs with 10 to 99 employees, 32% now call AI agents mission-critical to strategy.

Salesforce read the same tea leaves. This month it announced Agentforce Help Agent, an autonomous service agent with guided setup deployable in minutes, and signed a definitive agreement to acquire Fin, a customer agent platform purpose-built for SMBs and trusted by more than 30,000 companies. Close is expected in Q4 of fiscal 2027. Agentforce AI is being embedded free into Salesforce’s Free, Starter, and Pro subscriptions.

“easy by design, advanced by choice,” said Eddie Cliff, GM of SMB and Growth Products at Salesforce. Futurum Group’s Keith Kirkpatrick called the strategy an attempt to “capture business from SMBs on the rise so Salesforce can monetize AI consumption once they scale.”

That’s the incumbent play. The insurgent play, from no-code vendors like Glean, Dust, Gumloop, and LemonLime, is to reach those companies before Agentforce’s onboarding funnel does, with lighter setup, no seat minimums, and workflow builders a founder can wire up in an afternoon. Whoever converts the 14% into the majority owns the next leg of the curve.
