ChatGPT Work's Gmail and Slack webhooks flip inbound-lead replies from polling to instant draft

OpenAI turned on event-driven triggers for Gmail, Slack, and GitHub inside ChatGPT Work on August 25 — small B2B teams can now have a reply drafted the moment a prospect email lands.

On August 25, OpenAI switched on event-driven webhook triggers inside ChatGPT Work, replacing the older scheduled-polling model for Gmail, Slack, and GitHub with reactions that fire the instant something happens. The shift is small in surface area and large in what it implies about where ChatGPT is positioning itself in a working day.

Per Engadget, “OpenAI is making this feature available to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users starting today.” OpenAI’s own help center describes the wider footprint: “Event-triggered tasks run in Work and respond to supported Gmail, Slack, or GitHub activity, and are available to eligible users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, and in ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces.” The exclusions are pointed. “Free and Go accounts cannot create event-triggered tasks, and event-triggered tasks are not available in FedRAMP workspaces.”

The mechanics are narrower than the marketing suggests. “Gmail tasks can respond to a new message or filter by sender or subject.” “Slack tasks can respond to new channel messages, but @ChatGPT must be added to each monitored Slack channel.” And nothing goes out on its own: “An action that sends a message or changes external data may require approval, and if approval is required, the task pauses until the user reviews it.” Draft is instant; send is human.

That approval gate matters for how this actually lands in a five-to-thirty-person B2B team without a dedicated SDR. Speed-to-lead is where inbound conversion is won or lost, and a webhook that produces a contextual draft the moment a prospect email arrives closes the response gap without adding a separate automation stack. The rollout is uneven by design. On Business plans, “members use their own connected-app permissions and can share customizable scheduled tasks within their workspace.” For larger tenants, though, “Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare admins must first enable ‘Allow event-triggered scheduled tasks’ in Permissions and roles > Work, and this permission is off by default.” The Business tier gets a running start. Enterprise waits on IT.

What OpenAI has actually shipped is the plumbing layer beneath every prior promise of an AI assistant that “handles your inbox.” The interesting question is which competitors treat the webhook as a feature and which treat it as the whole product.
