Google's Gemini 3.8 Flash lands in AI Mode — and early tests show it's dropping citations

SEOs testing the new model on rollout day say top-of-funnel queries returned zero source links, an early warning for small businesses that rely on organic discovery.

Google added Gemini 3.8 Flash to AI Mode’s model picker on September 2, the same day the model shipped, and within hours the SEO community had documented what looks like a regression on the one behavior small businesses care about most: outbound citations.

Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable said flatly that AI Mode running 3.8 Flash “is not link or citation friendly.” SEO practitioner Gagan Ghotra posted a stack of top-of-funnel queries in AI Mode where the new model returned answers with no links or citations at all. Search Engine Watch reproduced the pattern in its own testing. Asked about it on X, Google’s Robby Stein replied only that citations are “yes, definitely an area of continued focus!”

Access is currently gated to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, who pick the model from the “+” icon in the AI Mode bar. Free-tier users stay on the default. That gating is the thing to pay attention to, because Google’s Flash line has a rhythm: Gemini 3 Flash became the AI Mode default in December, then 3.5 Flash took over as the global default at I/O in May. The paid preview graduates. It has each time.

Google describes 3.8 Flash as a model that “works harder,” running extra reasoning steps and repeated tool calls before it settles on an answer. In the testers’ logs, more internal reasoning correlates with fewer outbound links. That’s a coherent product decision. It’s also a coherent way to end the era in which Google Search functioned as a referral network for the open web.

For a founder-run business relying on organic search as a discovery channel, the leading indicator is already visible on the paid tier. Diversification isn’t a Q4 initiative anymore. Owned distribution, direct social presence, and paid surfaces on other AI-native platforms all become load-bearing sooner than most small operators have planned for. See our earlier coverage of Meta’s conversational analyst for small-business Facebook pages and ChatGPT’s self-serve ad tier across 31 European markets for where that budget is starting to move.

Stein’s reply is the tell. “Continued focus” is what you say when the trade-off is intentional and the roadmap doesn’t bend.
