OpenAI turns ChatGPT into a storefront: Sponsored Agents, HubSpot ties, and a free Shopify app go live

Four simultaneous moves on September 16 collapse the gap between AI discovery and purchase for small businesses already running HubSpot or Shopify.

OpenAI shipped four advertising products on September 16, and the sequencing tells the story: Sponsored Agents inside ChatGPT, a prompt-driven Ads Manager, HubSpot as first CRM partner, and a free ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store. Four moves, one day, one thesis. The AI assistant is the storefront now.

The scale context matters. PPC Land reports ChatGPT advertising went from nothing in February to a $1 billion annual run rate by the end of August. That’s not a growth curve; it’s the self-serve tier rolled out across 31 European markets in August finding its distribution.

Sponsored Agents are the more novel unit. A user clicks an ad in ChatGPT and drops into a conversation with a brand-sponsored agent, walled off from ChatGPT’s independent answers and from the user’s original chat. Angi is a launch pilot: homeowners can ask questions inside the sponsored agent before entering Angi’s service-request flow to reach local pros. It’s US-only for now. OpenAI hasn’t disclosed pricing, what data the advertiser receives from the transcript, or how conversation outcomes are measured. Three gaps that’ll shape whether this is a channel or a demo.

The distribution play is where owner-run teams of five to thirty should pay attention. HubSpot, named as first CRM partner, lets customers connect a ChatGPT Ads account, create ads, track performance, and follow up on leads without leaving the CRM. HubSpot’s own release adds up to 65% off Starter and Credits for a year, a buy-one-get-one-free offer on ChatGPT Business seats, and a $750 ad-spend match for new accounts opened by September 30. Shopify is first ecommerce partner; the free ChatGPT Ads app is live in the US immediately and expands to other ChatGPT Ads markets on September 23.

This is the same integration logic HubSpot has been running elsewhere: productize AEO as a standalone tool, sit inside the workflows small businesses already have, and price the friction to zero. The interesting question isn’t whether ChatGPT Ads works. It’s what happens to a small business’s funnel when the qualification conversation happens before the click.
