Conductor's 12X customer surge signals AI answer engines are now a primary discovery channel small businesses can't ignore
The enterprise AEO platform reported 12-fold customer growth and named a new CEO to push beyond measurement into action. Small teams still relying on traditional SEO alone are ceding a discovery layer that runs on the same content fundamentals they already know.
Conductor reported 12X year-over-year customer growth on its AEO product on September 24, promoted Chief Product Officer Wei Zheng to CEO, and signaled that answer engine optimization is no longer an experiment inside the enterprise. New-logo growth is tripling quarter over quarter. Hundreds of enterprises, including Charter, Airbnb, Coca-Cola, and Atlassian, adopted Conductor AI in its first year. Co-founder Seth Besmertnik, who ran the company for roughly two decades, is moving to the board.
The number that matters isn’t 12X. It’s the pivot underneath it.
“The next phase of AEO will require much more than measuring whether a brand appears in an AI answer. Enterprises need to understand why they are — or aren’t — being recommended, move quickly from insight to action, and continuously test, learn, and adapt rapidly at scale,” Zheng said. Translated: the market has already moved past dashboards that tell you ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews aren’t citing you. What buyers want now is the causal read and the fix.
For a five-to-thirty-person business, that’s the whole story. A parallel discovery funnel is running alongside Google, and it doesn’t produce clicks. It produces single-brand recommendations delivered inside an answer. Losing that layer is invisible in your analytics, which is what makes it dangerous.
The good news is that the signals AI engines weight, authoritative long-form content, structured data, citations, domain trust, are the same fundamentals a small team can already build without enterprise tooling. Which is why challenger brands are outperforming incumbents in AI search, why Profound just raised $180M on the visibility-measurement thesis, and why HubSpot has turned AEO into a standalone product aimed squarely below the enterprise line.
There’s a countercurrent worth naming. On September 25, London consultant Travers said most work sold as GEO is really SEO, that Google still drives the largest share of organic traffic and revenue across the ecommerce stores he works with, and that he now bundles AI monitoring into every service tier at no added charge. Both things are true. Google still pays the bills. The answer layer is where the next cohort of customers first hears your name, or doesn’t. Conductor plans to detail its roadmap at C3 in New York on October 28. Small businesses don’t need to wait for it, the content and structured-data work is the work, and it started being urgent a quarter ago.
