PostcardMania bundles answer-engine optimization into its SMB campaign as AI summaries strand small-business websites

The $100M-plus Clearwater marketing firm launched Optimize Search + AI on Sept. 28, citing research that only 8% of searches with an AI summary still send a click to a traditional result.

On Sept. 28, PostcardMania bolted an answer-engine optimization service called Optimize Search + AI onto its flagship Everywhere Small Business campaign, pitching it to the roughly 130,000 clients the Clearwater firm already serves. That’s the news. The frame is harder to miss: a $100-million-plus direct-mail company, with revenue closer to $120 million annually, is now selling Main Street dentists and plumbers a product designed to get them recommended inside ChatGPT, Claude, and Google’s AI Mode.

The pitch rests on a single, uncomfortable number. In an analysis of nearly 69,000 Google searches, only 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared produced a click through to a traditional result. AI Overviews now reportedly reaches 2.5 billion monthly active users; AI Mode, one billion. The SEO funnel small businesses spent fifteen years learning to game is quietly becoming a referral surface they don’t appear on.

“Small business owners cannot afford to ignore this shift in how people search. If your business isn’t clearly represented online in a number of places, those platforms are probably going to recommend a competitor instead — and the longer you wait, the more ground you could lose,” said Joy Gendusa, PostcardMania’s founder and CEO and this year’s Business Observer Top Entrepreneur.

The service runs on a three-month cadence: a Google Business Profile audit in month one, structural fixes in month two, content and earned-media work from month three onward. A business signing up Oct. 1 reaches the content phase in December. PostcardMania also cites separate research that earned media accounts for 84% of AI citations, which is why the back end is a PR engine, not a keyword tool.

Context sharpens the move. The Profound round of $180M at a $1.8B valuation priced AEO as enterprise infrastructure; Conductor’s 12x AEO growth showed the mid-market was buying; the challenger-brand pattern in AI search suggested the recommendation slot was still open. PostcardMania is the SMB tier filling in.

The same week brought launches from Multiply, Transcend, MNTN, Airship, and mostlyHUMAN. The category is no longer forming. It’s being packaged.
