OpenAI adds a visual ChatGPT ad format and 13 measurement partners, with a US pilot due this month

Image-led sponsored units will appear during image generation for Free and Go users, while new attribution integrations give small B2C brands a way to judge ChatGPT against Google and Meta.

OpenAI will begin a US-only test of visual ads inside ChatGPT later this month, placing image-led sponsored units alongside image-generation results for users on the Free and Go plans. The announcement, posted on October 15 under the title “Building advertising for the way people use AI,” pairs the new format with 13 measurement partners and arrives with ChatGPT claiming roughly 1.2 billion weekly users.

Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers won’t see the ads. The targeting is deliberate: the ad inventory sits inside the moment a user is actively generating an image, a high-intent window that resembles the pre-purchase browsing behavior Pinterest and Instagram have monetized for a decade.

The measurement list is where the strategic read gets interesting. Click attribution now runs through AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin. Full-funnel work goes to Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL. Haus, WorkMagic, and Measured handle geo-incrementality experiments; Kantar and Cint cover early brand-lift testing; Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp wire in conversion data. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are piloting brand-suitability evaluation.

That stack is the real tell. It’s the same measurement vocabulary small B2C marketing teams already use to grade Google and Meta against each other, which removes the usual objection to channel experimentation. A head of marketing can now put ChatGPT on the same dashboard, with the same attribution logic, as the two incumbents.

The ramp has been fast. ChatGPT ads first launched in February 2026, expanded to Australia roughly two months later, reached India in August, and hit a one-billion-dollar annual run rate about 200 days after opening globally. Tens of thousands of advertisers are already on the self-serve platform at ads.openai.com, from Airwallex and Kogan to L’Oréal, Virgin Australia, and Xero.

The subtext is harder to miss. OpenAI isn’t building a search-ads clone; it’s building the measurement surface advertisers need before they’ll reallocate budget. Everything else, including the visual format, follows from that.
