Stripe says agentic commerce 'went vertical' in September — and small businesses that haven't prepped for AI buyers are already behind
Stripe president John Collison told his own podcast that bot-driven purchases inflected sharply last month, days after his brother argued personal agents will act as a 'structural subsidy' for product quality.
On his Oct. 12 episode of Cheeky Pint, Stripe president John Collison said agentic commerce “basically started going vertical” in September, pinning the inflection on the consumer launch of Meta’s Muse assistant. He didn’t disclose figures. That’s the story.
Stripe sits on the transaction data; everyone else is reading tea leaves. The information asymmetry is itself the point. When the payments layer tells you a curve went vertical and declines to publish the curve, the signal is a positioning statement, not a disclosure. In August, Stripe paid $7.5 billion for OpenRouter, the gateway through which models including Muse route calls. Muse hit 2.18 million daily active users by Oct. 5, with purchases flowing through Link by Stripe and Shopify Shop Pay. On the same podcast, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, flanked by chief AI officer Alexandr Wang, said “way more businesses” are asking Meta to integrate deeply.
Three days before his brother’s podcast, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison posted on X that personal agents “will, I think, act as a kind of structural subsidy for product quality.” The argument, as TokenPost summarized it, is that agents comparing specs, reviews, after-sales service and prices erode the advantage of companies with large ad budgets and prominent placement.
Read together, the Collisons are describing a channel shift. The new shortlist is drawn by a machine reading structured product data, reviews, and content density. Ad spend doesn’t bribe an agent. SEO ranking isn’t the retrieval surface anymore. If you don’t produce legible signal, you aren’t in the set.
For founder-led businesses, the practical job is dull and continuous: branded content, personalized outreach, competitive positioning, published on a cadence agents can read. Meta is already pointing 200 million small businesses at Muse; ChatGPT Ads is wiring in first-party CRM data; TikTok has turned its feed into a full-funnel machine; even PostcardMania is bolting on answer-engine optimization. Services like LemonLime take the done-for-you route, studying a business’s industry, competitors, and content and preparing finished sales and marketing work proactively, with the owner approving every send.
Patrick Collison’s “structural subsidy” line is a prediction with a condition attached. The subsidy only flows to products the agents can see.
