Microsoft puts Copilot at the center of OneDrive, turning small-team file libraries into plain-English search

At the fourth annual OneDrive + Copilot Digital Event on October 20, Microsoft showcased natural-language Copilot Search, new model options, and AI-native file tools aimed at the Microsoft 365 users who already store every proposal and pitch deck in OneDrive.

Microsoft used its fourth annual OneDrive + Copilot Digital Event on October 20, 2026 to recast OneDrive as the file layer for Copilot-era work, with Copilot Search coming to OneDrive and SharePoint as the headline announcement. The 9:00 AM PT broadcast, keynoted by Jeff Teper, Adam Harmetz, and Arwa Tyebkhan, framed the shift plainly: the folder tree is no longer the interface. Natural language is.

Copilot Search, tracked as Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 573696, lets users query files in plain English and receive AI-generated summaries without leaving OneDrive or SharePoint, according to Windows Report. Preview begins in October 2026, with broader rollout scheduled for January 2027 starting on the web versions. Filters, refinements, and the option to transfer results into Copilot sit on top of the query layer.

For the owner-operator who already stores every proposal, deck, and client brief in Microsoft 365, this is a latency change. “Find my proposal for the construction client from August” replaces ten minutes of folder archaeology. The sales cycle compresses at exactly the point where small teams usually lose deals: between a prospect’s reply and a tailored response.

The October Copilot update also brings GPT 6.1 and Claude Opus 5.5 to Copilot Premium subscribers, a simplified OneDrive file recovery flow, and SharePoint’s ability to extract specific PDF sections and save them as new files, per Geeky Gadgets. The model-choice posture is the quiet tell. Microsoft is routing Anthropic alongside OpenAI inside its own productivity surface, treating the model layer as substitutable while the file graph stays proprietary.

That graph is the real asset. It’s the same logic behind Gemini’s workplace-agent expansion across Workspace and ChatGPT’s push into Business and Enterprise slide-building: own the artifacts, and the assistant follows.

At the enterprise layer, Microsoft’s September 25 Dynamics blog introduced Work IQ, described as grounding Copilot and agents in core business data from Dynamics 365 and Power Platform, with preview from September 30 and rollout continuing through October. OneDrive handles the documents. Work IQ handles the records. The pieces are being placed where small teams and large ones meet the same assistant from opposite ends of their data.
