Notion's sixth-generation agent harness breaks the 5-minute wall — tasks can now run 24 hours
A rebuilt agent runtime, browser and computer access, a cheaper Auto router, and a two-tier credit system reset what a small team can automate inside the workspace it already pays for.
On October 19, Notion shipped the sixth generation of its agent harness and quietly moved the ceiling on autonomous workspace tasks from five minutes to more than 24 hours. The headline number is the one that matters structurally: a 288x expansion in how long a single agent run can think, browse, and write before it hands work back.
Co-founder Akshay Kothari framed the release as a rebuild of the runtime that powers Notion Agent and Custom Agents, with every session now running on a dedicated service backed by a queue-based worker loop. According to TokenPost, agents can “open websites, fill out forms and download files,” which is the real unlock. The agent is no longer confined to Notion’s own database.
The economics shifted in parallel. Notion says its upgraded Auto router delivers results comparable to Opus 5.5 and Astra at roughly 90% lower average cost across more than 20 common tasks, with credits stretching about 10x further on routed work. Custom Agent runs are about 30% cheaper in testing, and infrastructure uptime now sits above 99.9%.
Credits themselves get a new shape. Business and Enterprise seats receive 1,500 Standard credits for Auto-routed work and 500 Select credits for choosing a specific model or running a personal Custom Agent. New workspaces are on the system now; existing ones migrate November 2.
The practical read for a five-to-thirty-person team is unglamorous and large. The five-minute cap was the specific technical reason overnight prospect research, competitive monitoring, and outreach-draft queues couldn’t live inside Notion. That cap is gone. A Custom Agent can now be pointed at a target account list after close of business and return structured notes, public signals, and personalized outreach stubs the next morning.
This lands inside a two-week cluster of similar moves, including Google’s full-workspace Gemini rollout and ChatGPT Slides reaching Business and Enterprise users. The pattern is legible: the productivity suites are racing to swallow the automation stack small teams used to assemble around them.
One advisory note. Select credits, the smaller bucket, are what fund Custom Agent runs. Pilot the overnight workloads you actually care about before the November 2 cutover, because the budgeting arithmetic matters more than the demo footage.
