Google AI Overviews now cover 88% of commercial searches, and small-business pages aren't in the answer
A Semrush panel of 400 US commercial keywords found AI Overviews on 88% in August — 97% when weighted by search volume — reshaping the moment buyers decide.
A 12-month Semrush panel published October 21, 2026 found that 88% of 400 tracked US desktop commercial keywords returned a Google AI Overview in August, up from 45.75% in September 2025. Weighted by search volume, the rate hits 97.08%. The study, authored by Luke Harsel with contributor Nikola Manojlović, covers banking, software, and ecommerce queries paired with buyer-stage modifiers: reviews, alternatives, pricing, “best X for Y,” and brand-vs-brand.
That’s the entire bottom of the funnel. “Best X for Y” sits at 96.12% coverage, brand-vs-brand at 86.59%, price/cost at 82.05%, alternatives at 82.81%. The “review” modifier posted the biggest jump of any cell: 30.14% a year ago, 89.04% in August, a 58.9-point swing. Three industry-and-modifier combinations hit 100% keyword-weighted coverage (best-X-for-Y in banking, alternatives in software, best-X-for-Y in software), and ecommerce as a vertical climbed from 32.62% to 85.11%. Twelve of fifteen cells cleared 80%.
The structural point isn’t just coverage. It’s who gets quoted. Semrush’s own example of “mailchimp vs klaviyo” shows the Overview citing Klaviyo’s guide for the “Choose Klaviyo if” line and Zapier for the “Choose Mailchimp” line, with additional citations from a YouTube video and another third-party site. Nine-point-two citations per response, on average. A brand’s competitor case is now routinely argued by someone else’s page.
Downstream traffic from AI chat assistants is still thin: Marie Haynes, analyzing 12 months of GA4 across 100 sites, pegs ChatGPT sessions at 0.62% of Google organic volume, with Google driving 96.5% of conversions; SEO Works puts organic at 39x AI-assistant traffic. But click-through on Google itself is collapsing where Overviews appear. Seer Interactive’s November 2025 study of 3,119 queries found a 61% CTR drop; Ahrefs, across 300,000 keywords in February 2026, found 58% for top-ranked pages. The ranking still exists. The click doesn’t.
This is the same arc as the 2008 Adobe-Omniture deal that absorbed independent analytics into a platform stack, now playing out one layer up: Adobe’s $1.9 billion acquisition of Semrush announced November 2025 lands precisely as the measurement surface shifts from rankings to citations. Semrush’s own guidance tells marketers to map which review platforms, roundups, YouTube videos, and community threads get cited, then make sure those pages describe the product accurately. DesignRush frames it bluntly: brands win review searches through the sites the Overview cites, not only through their own.
For a founder-led business, that’s a new full-time job nobody has budget for. LemonLime sits at this gap, continuously studying a business’s industry, competitors, and content and preparing the sales and marketing work (including which third-party sources and content opportunities matter for a given category) proactively, delivered each morning without the owner running a GEO workflow. The same displacement is visible in ChatGPT ads expanding to 89 countries and 100,000 advertisers and in Walmart’s agent gateway for AI shoppers.
The homepage used to be the first impression. It isn’t anymore.
