OpenAI turns ChatGPT into an ad platform with Sponsored Agents — and small businesses need to decide fast

Wayfair and Angi are the launch partners for a cost-per-conversation format that could reshape how small teams get discovered — even those who never buy a placement.

OpenAI introduced Sponsored Agents on Tuesday, September 16, turning ChatGPT into a paid-placement surface for the first time, with Wayfair and Angi as launch partners and a cost-per-conversation billing model that ports almost none of the assumptions of keyword search into the new format.

The unit itself is modest. The Verge describes a labeled card inside the chat thread carrying a brand logo, short description, and a “Connect with [Brand]” button that opens a full agent session. Advertisers get a self-serve dashboard for targeting, budget, and creative approval at launch. Users can dismiss the suggestion. Minimum spend hasn’t been disclosed, per The Verge, and OpenAI is working with the Interactive Advertising Bureau on measurement standards.

The economic story sits underneath. Bloomberg reports OpenAI citing internal projections of more than four billion commercial-intent queries per month inside ChatGPT, which is the number that makes an ad product legible to Madison Avenue. Executives told the Journal that advertising isn’t expected to move OpenAI’s projected $36 billion in 2026 revenue in any material way, but that it’s a strategic priority for 2027 planning. This is the AdWords moment being run intentionally, in daylight, with the pricing curve deliberately left ambiguous.

OpenAI president Greg Brockman said in a press briefing that the company sees agentic advertising as fundamentally different from keyword search advertising because the interaction is conversational and completion-oriented rather than click-based, according to the Journal. Angi’s early test, per Bloomberg, showed consumers booking more service appointments after starting with an AI agent conversation than after clicking a traditional search ad. That’s the pitch: fewer, higher-intent interactions, priced by completion rather than click.

The quieter release matters more for five-to-thirty-person businesses. Alongside the ad product, OpenAI shipped a free Shopify catalog-sync app and made its HubSpot integration generally available, per The Verge. Neither requires buying a placement. Together with Sponsored Agents they form a three-layer ChatGPT commerce stack that a small team can enter at zero ad spend, provided its product data and brand copy are intelligible to an agent.

That last condition is the whole game. As we’ve noted with challenger brands beating incumbents in AI search, the punishment for being illegible to AI-mediated discovery isn’t a lower ranking. It’s non-existence inside the interface where the query happened.
