Notion rebuilds its agent harness so tasks can run 24 hours — and says Auto router cuts AI costs 90%
The October 19 update lifts the five-minute runtime cap and routes most work to cheaper models, a direct cost-and-capability shift for small teams running marketing and sales research inside Notion.
Notion on October 19 released what it calls a sixth-generation agent harness, lifting the maximum runtime for a single AI task from five minutes to more than 24 hours and introducing an “Auto” model router the company says delivers comparable results at roughly 90% lower average cost.
“Notion Agents can now work on a single task for more than 24 hours, up from five minutes,” co-founder Akshay Kothari wrote in the announcement. The practical translation: a small team can set an agent on a competitor sweep, a long content draft, or a prospect-list enrichment at close of business and read the finished output over coffee. The old five-minute ceiling made that pattern impossible.
The infrastructure story matters more than the headline. Notion rebuilt the harness around a dedicated service and a queue-backed worker loop so jobs survive restarts, and claims uptime above 99.9% with Custom Agent runs costing about 30% less in testing. Auto, the new router, is pitched as hitting results similar to Opus 5.5 and Astra at roughly 90% lower average cost across 20-plus common use cases, a benchmark Startup Fortune notes hasn’t yet been tested against messier real-world prompts beyond Notion’s own task set.
Pricing moves with it. Business and Enterprise seats now include 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits per month, with new workspaces on the structure as of October 19 and existing workspaces scheduled to migrate November 2. Notion says included credits go roughly 10 times further under Auto routing. Agents also gain browser access, a built-in computer for code and files, and a “Review for me” safety mode run by a separate model.
The strategic read is that this is a context-layer bet, not a model bet. Microsoft is wiring Copilot into OneDrive as a default, and Google is pushing to turn Gemini into a full Workspace agent. Notion’s wager is that whoever owns the documents, the queries, and the overnight queue ends up owning the agent, the model underneath is a routing decision, not a moat.
