ChatGPT Work adds Gmail and Slack webhook triggers, turning inbound messages into instant AI drafts
OpenAI's August 25 upgrade lets paid subscribers fire a Work prompt the moment a Gmail message lands or a Slack channel receives a post — replacing polling with event-driven responses.
OpenAI on August 25, 2026 extended ChatGPT Work’s scheduled-tasks feature with webhook triggers, letting a prompt fire the instant a Gmail message arrives, a Slack channel receives a post, or a supported pull request lands in an authorized GitHub repository. The shift is architectural, not cosmetic: it moves ChatGPT from a polling model to an event-driven one, which is the same transition that reshaped ops tooling in the mid-2010s when Zapier and IFTTT gave way to webhook-native platforms.
Engadget reported that “OpenAI is making this feature available to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users starting today,” and OpenAI’s own release notes confirm eligibility also extends to Edu plans and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Free and Go accounts get the upgraded scheduling menu but not event triggers.
The plumbing is deliberate. Per OpenAI’s documentation, Gmail tasks can respond to a new message or filter by sender or subject, Slack tasks can respond to new channel messages, and GitHub tasks can respond to supported pull request activity in an authorized repository. Setup runs through Settings > Apps, and monitored Slack channels require adding @ChatGPT as a member. Anything that sends a message or mutates external data may require approval; if so, the task pauses until the user reviews it.
That approval gate matters. It reframes the feature as drafting-plus-human-send rather than autonomous action, which is the posture regulated buyers have been demanding since the first agent demos went sideways in 2024.
Governance splits by tier. On Business, members inherit their own connected-app permissions. On Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare, admins must first enable “Allow event-triggered scheduled tasks” in Permissions & roles > Work, and the permission is off by default. Healthcare workspaces carry a hard limit: these tasks aren’t covered under a Business Associate Agreement and must not be used to transmit, store, or process protected health information.
The practical read is speed-to-lead. For a team of five to thirty without a dedicated inbox watcher, the webhook-triggered workflow first previewed for ChatGPT Work compresses response windows from hours to seconds. It’s the operational payoff of the ChatGPT for Small Business program OpenAI unveiled in July. OpenAI has published no data on outcomes.
