ChatGPT Ads crosses $1B run rate and opens self-serve buying in 52 countries, with a $25-a-day floor
OpenAI's August 31 expansion drops the entry price for AI-answer advertising from a $200,000 managed deal to a self-serve card-and-budget account — a first affordable paid placement inside AI-assisted purchase journeys for small teams.
OpenAI announced on August 31 that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualised run rate in under 200 days and opened its self-serve Ads Manager to eligible advertisers across Europe, India, and MENA. By September 3, the help centre listed 52 countries in six regions: 32 in Europe (including the UK and Switzerland), 7 in the Middle East, 4 in North Africa, 3 in North America, plus 5 across Asia-Pacific (Australia, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand).
The economics have inverted in eight months. At launch in January, ChatGPT Ads was a $60 CPM inventory sold through managed deals with a $200,000 minimum. The US channel opened on February 9 on the same terms. By March, OpenAI reported roughly $100 million annualised in about six weeks. Now the same inventory is buyable on a credit card from a $25/day account, with CPC bidding suggested at $3–$5 and outcome-optimised bidding available for advertisers running the Pixel or the Conversions API. Conversions surface in reporting after 24 to 48 hours; view-through conversions log on a fixed one-day window.
The reach story is real but narrower than the headline suggests. ChatGPT has over a billion weekly users and more than 80% sit on the free tier, which is the only place ads render alongside the Go tier. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education, Temporary Chats, the Atlas browser test, and any user under 18 are excluded. There’s no keyword list; advertisers write context hints at the ad-group level, which OpenAI notes “are not exact-match controls, audience targeting rules, or instructions to show your ad only for specific conversations.” Custom audiences need 25,000 matched users to activate and 100,000 for OpenAI’s recommended threshold. OAI-AdsBot must be allowed through robots.txt before an ad can serve.
The disclosures are worth reading twice. The default Maximize results strategy “does not guarantee delivery against a specific CPA, CPC, ROAS, or other cost-efficiency target at this time,” and OpenAI concedes that “As an early platform, ChatGPT Ads does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries, or campaign types.” Its own case study, 3× ROAS over 28 days, 80%+ new customers, is a single advertiser.
We previously covered the European rollout that preceded this expansion, and it lands as Gemini 3.8 Flash is reshaping AI-answer traffic. The channel that used to require a six-figure commitment now sits behind the same friction as a Meta account. Tens of thousands of advertisers are already there, on a platform still labeled beta.
